Hints On The History Of Judo

» The word Judo means { Gentle way } .

» Ancient Jujitsu is the forerunner of Judo .

» JIGORO KANO (1860-1939) is the founder of modern Judo . He studied the ancient Jujitsu, and in 1882 he developed his own school which he called the “ KODOKAN ” .  He named his style of JUJITSU JUDO to emphasize the way or principle, rather than the techniques themselves .

»
Jigoro Kano pulled from ancient Jujitsu some of the best of its throws and grappling techniques, added some of his own , and in space of a few years , changed a dying art into an exercise that emphasized moral and intellectual training as well as physical training .

» Jujitsu emphasized roughness and dangerous bodily injury, while Kano’s Kodokan Judo taught a competitive and a relaxing sport that only incidentally was a useful art of self-defense .  Kano , deploring violence and rowdiness , founded a whole new system for physical culture and mental training .

He developed the slogan :  “ Maximum efficiency with minimum effort, for the mutual welfare and benefit of all “ .
